Heart Health

Your heart works around the clock. Small, steady habits — moving more, eating well, and taking your medicine — help it keep going strong.

Why it matters

Heart disease is common, but much of it can be prevented or managed. Knowing your numbers helps you and your care team catch problems early.

Everyday habits that help
  • Move your body most days — even a 10-minute walk counts.
  • Choose more vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains.
  • Use less salt and fewer fried or packaged foods.
  • If you smoke, ask for help to quit — it is never too late.
  • Take your medicines the same time each day.
Talk to your care team if
  • Call 911 for new chest pain, pressure, squeezing, tightness, or discomfort — especially with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  • You are short of breath doing things that used to be easy.
  • Your heartbeat feels very fast, slow, or uneven.
What to track at home
Blood pressureSit quietly for 5 minutes, feet flat, arm supported. Measure at the same time each day.
PulseNote if your heartbeat feels regular. Very fast or uneven beats are worth mentioning.
